Ogba: Africa Had a Philosophy of Balance Before the West Had Philosophy
Before Aristotle wrote about virtue, Ma'at had been governing Egyptian jurisprudence for two thousand years. Before the Tao Te Ching described the balance of opposing forces, Yoruba cosmology had mapped the relationship between Orun and Aiye, the spiritual and material worlds, with a precision that made the distinction functional rather than merely poetic. Before Western philosophy named duality as a concept, African knowledge systems had built entire civilisations on its principles.
No, it's not a competition. It is a correction.
Ma'at: The World's First Philosophy of Justice
Ma'at is usually described as the Egyptian goddess of truth and justice. This is accurate but insufficient. Ma'at was also a philosophical principle, a legal framework, a cosmological ordering system, and a theory of governance that underpinned Egyptian civilisation for over three thousand years.
The concept of Ma'at held that the universe operated according to principles of truth, balance, order, harmony, law, morality, and justice, and that human society was obligated to reflect those principles in its organisation. Pharaohs ruled not by divine whim but by their ability to maintain Ma'at, the cosmic balance. Judges dispensed not personal opinion but Ma'at. The famous weighing of the heart in the Book of the Dead, in which a soul's heart was weighed against the feather of Ma'at, was not mythology in the dismissive sense. It was a philosophical statement about the relationship between individual conduct and universal order.
Plato was born in 428 BCE. The Maxims of Ptahhotep, one of the earliest known philosophical texts and a sustained meditation on Ma'at, were written around 2400 BCE. The philosophical tradition that Western education calls ancient is, by African standards, relatively recent.
Ubuntu: The Philosophy That Makes Persons
Ubuntu is the most internationally recognised African philosophical concept, and also the most consistently misrepresented one. It is translated as "I am because we are," which is correct but flattens a sophisticated epistemological position into a motivational poster.
Ubuntu is not sentiment. It is an ontological claim about the nature of personhood. In Ubuntu philosophy, a human being does not arrive in the world as a complete individual who then chooses to enter into relationships. A human being becomes a person through relationships, through the reciprocal obligations of community life, through the recognition of others. Personhood is not a given. It is an achievement, and it is always a collective one.
This position has profound implications for law, governance, psychology, economics, and ethics that African philosophers have been developing for centuries and that Western philosophy is only now beginning to engage with seriously. Ubuntu is not a warm feeling about community. It is a rival theory of what human beings are.
Iwa Pele: The Yoruba Science of Character
Iwa Pele, gentle or good character, is the central ethical concept of Yoruba philosophy. It holds that the quality of a person's character is the primary determinant of their spiritual, social, and material wellbeing, and that the cultivation of character is therefore the primary obligation of a human life.
This sounds simple. It is not. Yoruba philosophical tradition develops Iwa Pele into a comprehensive ethical framework that addresses the relationship between individual character and communal health, between personal conduct and cosmic order, between the choices made in this life and the ori, the personal destiny, that each person carries. The Ifa corpus, 256 configurations each with hundreds of associated verses, is substantially a philosophical and ethical treatise on the cultivation of Iwa Pele across every conceivable human situation.
It is one of the most extensive philosophical literatures in human history. It was transmitted orally, which is why it does not appear in Western histories of philosophy.
Nommo: The Force of the Word
The Dogon people of Mali developed a philosophical concept called Nommo, the generative power of the spoken word, the force through which intention becomes reality. Nommo is not magic in the dismissive sense. It is a philosophical position about the relationship between language, consciousness, and the material world.
The Dogon held that words do not merely describe reality. They participate in creating it. The quality of speech, its truth, its precision, its ethical alignment, determines its creative force. This position has interesting resonances with contemporary philosophy of language and with quantum physics' developing understanding of the relationship between observation and reality. The Dogon arrived there through philosophical reasoning. They did not need the Large Hadron Collider.
The Balance in the Image
Two figures. Spirals. Circles within circles. The geometry of the relationship. Ogba, the gathering of forces, the place where cosmologies meet and discover that they were always describing the same thing.
Africa did not borrow its philosophy from anywhere. It built it from the ground up, tested it against the hardest conditions human beings have ever faced, and encoded it in systems sophisticated enough to survive everything that was subsequently done to erase them.
